Merthel Whittle, age 87 of Brownsville, peacefully departed this life at her home with her family by her side on Saturday, July 22, 2023. The Edmonson County native was born on April 3, 1936 to the late Lewis Coleman and Pauline Embry Ritter. She was married to her devoted husband and help mate of almost seventy years, Leon Whittle, whom survives.
Merthel worked with her hands as a homemaker to care for the needs of her family. She was a faithful member of Beaver Dam Chapel United Baptist Church, until her health began to fail. She was a spiritual role model for many young women in their church, and in the community.
Besides her husband, Leon, she leaves to honor her memory— two sons and their wives, Grant and Stephanie Whittle and Gregory and Kelly Whittle, all of Brownsville, along with three grandchildren, Kaitlin Sisk and her husband Brandon, Trent Whittle and Chloe Whittle. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Magdalene Meredith.
Interment will be in Hawkins Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to: Hawkins Cemetery Fund, c/o Gale Renfro.
