Johnny Cummings, Jr., age 90 of Brownsville, was surrounded by his loving family when the Lord called him to his eternal home on Sunday, October 13, 2024. The Grayson County native was born on October 2, 1934 to the late Ulva and Johnny Cummings, Sr. He was united in marriage for sixty-two years to his best friend and the love of his life, Marcella Haycraft Cummings, who survives.
Johnny devoted his career to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist, where he demonstrated his commitment to the land and its preservation. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University, a testament of his dedication to his field. Throughout his life, Johnny served with great devotion as a trustee of Brownsville Cemetery, a trustee and deacon of Brownsville Missionary Baptist Church, and a charter member of the Edmonson County Industrial Authority. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, and he took immense joy in serving the Lord. In previous years, he also served as Sunday School Superintendent, passing on the values of faith and fellowship to countless children and young adults.
It was in his personal life where Johnny's true legacy shined the brightest. Described by many as meek and humble, he was the epitome of an adoring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, true friend and neighbor. Proverbs 18:24 resonates profoundly with those who knew him, "A man that hath friends must show himself friendly." Johnny was that man, one who steadfastly stood by and cared for those he loved.
Besides his beloved wife, Marcella Haycraft Cummings, he leaves to honor his memory— his three children, Rhonda Meredith (Gary) of Bee Spring, David Cummings (Sheila) of Bowling Green, and Donna Martin (Porter) of Smiths Grove; his five cherished grandchildren, Brett Meredith (Heather), Ryan Cummings (Jessica), Krista Stinson (Miles), Maci Davidson (Tanner) and Peyton Martin; eight great-grandchildren, Jackson Bley Meredith, Brooklyn, Camden, and Adam Cummings, Mav and Jax Stinson, and JoJo and Vinny Davidson; a brother, Bennie Cummings, along with several nieces, nephews, neighbors, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his gentle spirit. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Florene McDaniel, Clifton, and Tommy Cummings.
Interment will be in Brownsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Brownsville Cemetery Fund, c/o Barry Woodcock, 15095 Louisville Road, Smiths Grove, KY 42171.
