Joey “Bird” James, age 55 of Brownsville, departed this life at his residence on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The Edmonson County native was born on September 27, 1968, to Deloras “Dee” Vincent Wilson and the late Billy Joe James.
Joey was a 1987 graduate of Edmonson County High School and was a great athlete for the Wildcats. He was a sports fanatic and most especially loved University of Kentucky basketball. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing travel softball for Bertie’s and Bank of Edmonson County with all of his buddies and Anthony “Slug” Duvall. Joey worked for many years at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, then at BGM-Magna. He was a member of Pleasant Union United Baptist Church.
Besides his mother, Dee, he leaves to honor his memory— his daughters, Michelle Haycraft (Preston) of Bee Spring and Sarah Mooneyhan (Luke) of Morgantown; four grandchildren; his brother, Cliff Simmons of Brownsville; aunts and uncle, Jane James, Barbara Vincent, Rondal Vincent, Jan Campbell (Skip), Venetta Webb (Donald) and Shelia Meredith; nieces and nephew, Alex Lasley (Kevin), Sherry Reed and Chad Moore, along with several cousins, extended family members and friends, who he loved. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Roland Simmons and Vickie Crews.
The interment will be in Brownsville Cemetery.
