Jimmie R. Houchins

1931 - 2015

After a brief illness with cancer, Jimmie R. Houchins, age 83, departed this life on Thursday, July 2, 2015.  The Edmonson County native was born on October 17, 1931 to the late Virgil M. and Gertie Kinser Houchins.  On December 20, 1953, he married his loving and devoted wife, Nellie M. Cherry Houchins, who survives.

Jimmie was a farmer, which afforded him time to meditate, pray and keep his mind upon the Lord.  He was the oldest, active Charter Member of Chalybeate United Baptist Church, and was a faithful servant to his church and community.  He served as church clerk for 26 years, was an ordained deacon and trustee for many  years.

He was a true, Christian neighbor and friend.  Jimmie delighted himself in helping others  with his genuine, humble spirit.

Besides his wife Nellie, he leaves to honor his memory-- three daughters, Cherry Miller of Plum Springs, KY, Robin Tomes (Clifton) of Bowling Green and Charlotte Rappuhn (Jeff ) of  Nashville, TN;  two sisters, Martha Schultz (Bill) of Louisville, KY and Mary Alice Vincent (Johnny Pete) of Brownsville, KY; five grandchildren, Jonathan Tomes (Ashlee), Carly Miller, Dylan Miller, Lucas Rappuhn and Jonah Rappuhn and two great grandchildren, Jaggar and Jack Tomes.  He was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, London Tomes; three brothers, Earl “Hambone” , Tommy and Joe Houchins and three sisters, Virgie Booker, June Priddy and Ella Perna.

Contributions may be made to Kinser Cemetery c/o Lee Ann Elmore, 940 Bledsoe Rd., Smiths Grove, KY 42171 or Chalybeate Church Building Fund c/o  James Napier, 351 Renfro Ray Rd.,  Smiths Grove, KY 42171.
