Jessie Van McCombs, 89 of Brownsville passed away at his home early Friday morning with complications from Alzheimer's. He was the son of
Milton and Maude Smith McCombs.
Born August 17, 1920, the Edmonson Country native was a decorated veteran of WWII where he served in the European Theatre under General Patton and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
A retired mechanic from Mammoth Cave National Park, he also spent years as a farmer and operated his own saw mill business.
He enjoyed his family, traveling, and spending time at his cabin that he built himself on his farm. His favorite day was his annual fall homecoming he held for many friends and family at his cabin.
Preceded in death by his wife Marie Parsley McCombs and son Gary McCombs, he is survived by 3 sons David McCombs of Brownsville, Ronnie McCombs and his wife Carol of Franklin. Dwight McCombs and his wife Cindy of Bowling Green, 2 daughters Glyfada Kinser and her husband Larry of Brownsville and Dwayna McCombs of Nashville.
Grandchildren include Angeline Taylor, Courtney Kinser, Gina Roddy, Mary Pelaez, Kelly Moss, Kris McCombs, Scott Woodcock, and 5 great grandchildren.
Siblings Barbara Key of Glendale, Marie McCombs, Gil (Doc) McCombs and Melvin McCombs of Louisville, George (Dizzy) McCombs of Munfordville, and Zula Tatman of London, Ohio. Also the late Milton Jr. (June) McCombs and the late Edwin McCombs.
Saved in 1950, he was a long time member of Oak Grove United Baptist Church.
